As a school, we teach our PSHE through a scheme called Jigsaw. Class teachers deliver the units in weekly timetabled lessons. Every class has their own unique Jigsaw character to support them during their lessons: Reception – Jenie, Year 1 – Jack, Year 2 – Jo, Year 3 – Jino, Year 4 – Jaz, Year 5 – Jez and Year 6 – Jem.
Jigsaw 3-11 offers Primary PSHE including statutory Relationships and Health Education (England), in a spiral, progressive and fully planned scheme of work.
This comprehensive programme gives children relevant learning experiences to help them navigate their world and to develop positive relationships with themselves and others.
With a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health, Jigsaw equips our staff to deliver engaging and relevant PSHE within a whole-school approach. Jigsaw lessons also include mindfulness, allowing children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration and focus.
By using Jigsaw our aim is to help our pupils know and value who they really are and how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world.
The 6 Jigsaw Puzzles (half-termly units) are designed so the whole school can study the same learning themes at the same time, with each year group at its own level. Every Piece has two Learning Intentions, one specific to Relationships and Health Education (PSHE) and the other designed to help develop emotional literacy and social skills. The Puzzles are sequential and developmental throughout each academic year. Each unit is introduced during an introductory assembly, generating a whole school focus for adults and children alike.
